Here is my ranking (from least favourite to most favourite) of the films within the I Spit On Your Grave franchise, with a short explanation accompanying each:
(Side note: Not including the the 1978 Original, which I have not seen)
#3 – I Spit On Your Grave 2
A torture-porned up rehash of the original with little emotional connection to the main character which in turn makes her actions less forgivable.
#2 – I Spit On Your Grave 3
The true sequel to the ‘original’ rather than a rehash with a different girl in a different setting. Though a sequel was not in any way needed, it is approached in a natural if messed up way – showing what can happen if the justice system and victim support services go wrong.
#1 – I Spit On Your Grave
The first film works because it is shocking, horrific and emotional. It is harrowing watching what the character goes through and it is brilliantly shot and acted, which makes for uncomfortable viewing. The actions that the protagonist takes to enact her revenge feels entirely justifiable and to a certain degree you root for her. Not because killing someone is the right thing to do but because she is an undeserving victim who snaps.
Apparently there will be a fourth film which will follow Jennifer… again… unnecessary but let’s see what they do with it.
