With the title The Package your mind could assume many things (which I will not list) but this package refers to accepting someone as they are, all parts of them, no matter what, because whatever it is it comes as part of “the package”.
Initially I thought that this was going to be a light-hearted school romance with it’s brightness and music but, to a certain degree, the core of this short is rather dark and is about [SPOILER ALERT] HIV. I do not have any knowledge of HIV prevalence in Brazil, nor the social attitudes towards it, but I can assume that it is similar (or worse) than here in the UK. Therefore it is unfortunately still heavily stigmatised and misunderstood. That being said all we find out is that Jefferson is HIV+; we get no back story.
There’s almost a touching moment between Jefferson and his teacher (who we assume is HIV+ too) after seeing each other at the clinic (is it a clinic dedicated to HIV treatment?) but there isn’t much emotion to truly pack a punch.
Yes Jefferson is clearly scared about telling Leandro and Leandro clearly becomes reserved but there isn’t a climatic make or break moment.
That being said the ending is rather positive.
Things I Liked: 1 - The positive ending Things I Didn't Like: 1 - Not knowing the how and why Jefferson is HIV+
